An increasing body of Academic Research correlates exposure to the Arts and individual and academic success. Music education, in particular, encourages personal development, especially when students are engaged in group activities.

The power of music is indisputable because it emanates from the river of continuity. From time immemorial customs, traditions, folklore and history have been transmitted and preserved through music and song. In recognition of this, Arima West Government Primary has placed emphasis on harnessing the musical talents of children at an early age.

Through the vision and effort of Mrs. Grace Munro and Mrs. Ayana Prudhomme, many students have been able to develop into budding musicians. The following photo gallery shows some of them in action.

MUSIC EDUCATION

As the pictures show, children at Arima West Government Primary School are exposed to a variety of stringed, wind and percussion instruments. Some of our past pupils have already become tutors in their own right, while many of our present students are part of the junior section of the Trinidad and Tobago Philharmonic Orchestra.

The music program targets children who reside in deprived communities and who would otherwise be unable to afford formal musical training. This programme has been subsidised through grants given by the Ministry of National Security, Atlantic Energy, Angostura, and fund raising outings planned by Mrs. Munro in collaboration with some teachers and supportive parents.

PAN THEATRE

The national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago has the distinction of being the only instrument invented in the twentieth century. Through the ingenuity and craftsmanship of early pioneers of the pan, oil drums designed to store petroleum evolved into instruments, which are well known and appreciated internationally.

Arima West Government Primary School is blessed with a fully stocked Pan Theatre. Our students are therefore ably tutored by personnel provided by the Government.
